Cakes for Kids

A fun cake is a great addition to a kid’s birthday party. Here are a few we’ve done recently:

A Spongebob single tier cake with buttercream decoration and toys

The colorful background design makes this cake fun and playful, and the cost is kept down by the incorporation of character toys.

Sock monkey sheet cake with fondant artwork

This was for a sock monkey themed cake. We really liked the monkey (so cute!). The argyle design on the sides was a playful touch.

Cowboy sheet cake with buttercream artwork

This customer requested a cowboy themed sheet cake and provided a paper plate she was using for the party. Katie was able to recreate the cowboy on top, as well as the bandana print from the border of the plate. It's always fun to have decoration on the sides of the cake, as well as on top.

Two-tier batman cake with toys and fondant decoration
This Batman cake has fondant decoration to match the theme, and toys to play with when the party is over!

Carved owl cake
This little girl has a owl-themed nursery, and her mom wanted to use her bedding and wall decal as inspiration for the cake. We made an owl shaped cake with fondant decoration, and a buttercream cake with the flower and vines from the inspiration picture

Yo Gabba Gabba molded figure

Foofa was molded out of rice cereal treat and covered with fondant for a Yo Gabba Gabba themed birthday party. The birthday girl was so excited that Foofa was coming to her party!

Buzz Lightyear fondant cake
This cake was for a big Toy Story fan. His mom said he really likes Buzz Lightyear, so we made a cake with Buzz wings, a starry fondant board, and his name and age to match his party theme.

Kids cakes with lots of colors can brighten up a party, add to the decoration, and be a great surprise for the birthday girl or boy. It is fun to take inspiration from a favorite show, character, or toy. We can make a sheet cake, single round, or multi-tier cake to serve your guests.

We can incorporate the theme through toys, molded figures, and fondant or buttercream artwork. A great kids cake is colorful, has enough decoration to be playful but not so much as to be distractingly busy.

Personalizing Your Wedding Cake Design

It is important for the groom to feel a part of the wedding planning process, and for his ideas and tastes to be considered, as this is a special day for both, not just for the bride. He may not have been dreaming of this day for years, but he has opinions and preferences that can be expressed in the cake.

Encourage your fiancée to come in with you and have ideas, ask him questions, incorporate him into your day. We appreciate it when the men come in with an opinion because it makes the cake design more personal to the couple than when the groom just leaves everything up to the bride.

There are several ways to merge his interests in your cake design:

  • Incorporate his favorite team's colors or his favorite color in your cake design
  • Pick a fun topper to show hobbies, pets, teams, or things you enjoy together
  • Order a groom's cake to show off his interests, his hobbies, or his job

One of our brides this weekend did a really good job of representing her groom’s interests in her cake design. He is an Oakland Raiders fan so she had a Raiders topper and used team colors. The silver and black ribbon tied in his favorite team’s colors, while maintaining the fun, girly look she wanted.

Last month we had a couple that added their dog to their topper and meaningful song lyrics to the design.  We really liked the way they used their cake to express what is important to them.

A groom’s cake can be a great surprise, or something you plan together.
This cake was a surprise for an avid bass fisherman.

This bride was proud of her policeman and wanted a cake to celebrate his devotion to his occupation. It was also a symbol of the bride joining him in his commitment. This would also be a good idea for a firefighter or military groom’s cake.

We would love to help you customize your cake. To help us do that, ask your groom for ideas of what he would like on the cake, even for flavor preferences. Be sure to be open to his ideas; don’t dismiss what he says. Bring things you like, invitations, color swatches, pictures of cakes, ideas to personalize your cake, and we’ll help you combine them into one cohesive design.

Settlers of Catan

We recently did a cake for a Settlers of Catan fan, incorporating the pieces of the game with buttercream details. We thought it turned out really well!

From the Baker

Hi! I'm Sarah, and I'm the baker at A Piece of Cake Bakery in Santa Clara, California. I'm writing this blog to tell you about our cake, our staff, and the great work we do! I will also include tips for a successful cake tasting and planning experience, and other wedding and party information.

Let me start with some background. I've been working at A Piece of Cake Bakery since June 2009, along with Katie, our manager and decorator. Jenn has been with the bakery since January 2011, and she's a great addition to our team. We are a very small company, with only three full time employees. We also have a part-time dishwasher and a part-time delivery driver. They help us get our cakes made and delivered on time.

Working with the team at A Piece of Cake is a lot of fun; they're great people. Our customers bring us exciting new designs and ideas for us to translate into cake. Here are a few favorites from the past:
